American Society of Addiction raises awareness about opioid epidemic treatment gap

WELCOME BACK, WE TALK A LOT ABOUT ADDICTION AND THE OPIOID CRISIS, BUT THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS THERE IS A HUGE GAP , BETWEEN THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE STRUGGLING WITH ADDICTION AND THOSE SEEKING TREATMENT. THIS WEEK THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF ADDICTION MEDICINE IS RAISING AWARENESS ABOUT THE TREATMENT GAP AND WAYS TO CLOSE IT. THE HEAD OF THE GROUP SAYS F THE FIRST TIME IN ADDICTION 2016, TREATMENT IS RECOGNIZED AS A MEDICAL SUB SPECIALTY. HAVING MORE PHYSICIANS IN THE FIELD COULD BE ONE WAY TO MAKE CARE MORE ACCESSIBLE TO THOSE WHO NEED IT MOST PEOPLE ARE NOT BEING ABLE TO ACCESS THE TREATMENT FOR ADDICTION THAT THEY NEED. THAT IS FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS. THERE ARE ABOUT 20 MILLION AMERICAN WHO HAVE AN ADDICTIVE DISEASE AND ONLY 10% ACCESS SPECIALTY CARE. UNFORTUNATELY, THE CARE THEY ACCESS IS OFTEN, T OFTEN, NOT EFFECTIVE OR APPROPRIATE FOR THEM. AND THAT IS BECAUSE WE HAVE NOT TRAINED AND IDENTIFIED ENOUGH ADDICTION PHYSICIAN SPECIALISTS. IT IS ONLY RECENTLY THAT WE AS A COUNTRY HAVE EMBRACED THE SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE THAT ADDICTION IS A CHRONIC BRAIN DISEASE.
