Brown signs executive order, bills on drug addiction

CRISIS IN OREGON. DAN: TODAY SHE SIGNED NEW LAWS THAT WILL ADD ADDITIONAL FUNDING TO BATTLE OPIOD ADDICTION. OUR CHRIS HOLMSTROM MET WITH HER AND JOINS US NOW WITH THE LATEST. CHRIS: EXPERTS TELL ME WE ARE LOSING AN OREGONIAN EVERY OTHER DAY DUE TO OPIOD OVERDOSES. IT IS A SOBERING STATISTIC THAT SEVERAL STATE AGENCIES AND LAWMAKERS ARE TRYING TO CHANGE. BATTLING THE OPIOD EPIDEMIC. GOVERNOR KATE BROWN SIGNING TWO BILLS INTO LAW. ONE FOCUSES ON MEASURES TO COMBAT THE OPIOD EPIDEMIC WHILE THE OTHER FOCUSES ON CREATING A STATEWIDE PLAN AROUND PREVENTION, TREATMENT AND RECOVERY. IF WE CAN MAKE MEANINGFUL CHANGE IN ADDICTION PREVENT TREATEMENT AND RECOVER WE CAN CREATE BETTER LIVES FOR OUR FAMILIES. CHRIS: PROGRAMS LIKE LINES FOR LIFE ALSO PLAYING A BIG ROLE. THE NON PROFIT AIMS TO HELP PREVENT SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND SUICIDE. JON ADDIS IS ONE OF THEIR VOLUNTEERS. HE’S ALSO A RECOVERING ADDICT, HE’S BEEN ADDICTED TO OPIODS FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS. I WENT FROM HAVING A HOUSE AND FAMILY AND KIDS I WAS INVOLVED IN THEIR LIFE TO BEING ON THE STREET, BROKE HOMELESS, OD’ING I OD SEVERAL TIMES MYSELF. CHRIS: HE ADMITS IT WAS HARD TO QUIT. AND HOPES THE NEW BILLS WILL HELP PEOPLE GET THE HELP THEY NEED, ESPECIALLY BY OFFERING MORE RESOURCES. THERE’S SPECIFIC RESOURCES LIKE ADDICTION RECOVERY MENTORS THAT I THINK CAN REALLY BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN TREATEMENT AND ACTUAL GETTING OUT OF TREATMENT AND BEING IN RECOVERGING. CHRIS: THE OPIOD EPEDIMIC ALSO AN ISSUE FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT. IN FACT, THIS MORNING POLICE MADE THIS DRUG BUST IN SOUTHEAST PORTLAND. OFFICERS SAY IT’S ENOUGH TAR HEROIN TO GET HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE HIGH. WHICH GOES BACK TO THE MAIN GOAL OF THE EXECUTIVE ORDER. CREATING A STATE PLAN AROUND PREVENTION, TREATMENT AND RECOVERY. MY GOAL IS TO MAKE SURE THAT FOLKS GET THE MOST EFFECTIVE TREATEMENT FIRST AND MOST NEEDED ASSISTANCE NOW. CHRIS: OBVIOUSLY STILL A LOT OF WORK TO DO, BUT LAWMAKERS AND STATE AGENCIES SAY THEY ARE COMMITTED TO THE CAUSE. AND WILL CONTINUE TO LOOK FOR SOLUTIONS TO END THIS PUBLIC
