Building Tools to Address Addiction and Overdose: The Bloomberg American Health Initiative

– Emergency services overwhelmed, another family burying a loved one. – 91 Americans are still
dying every single day. – Drug overdoses now kill more people than guns or car accidents. – This opiate crisis
we’ve seen so much loss, and so much grief. There’s people that are struggling
with a major health issue that are being pushed aside. It’s so important to provide
that safety net for those folks so that they don’t have to feel alone, so that they can still have a chance to rebound from that situation. The Bloomberg American
Health Initiative’s goal is to really build tools
to help address these issues in communities across the country, to be able to bridge that gap between the voices of the people
using on the street and the people trying
to figure out what to do to address this epidemic. I think about drug users’
health as an entire continuum of care that people need to survive. It starts with making sure that they have the tools and the knowledge to
be safe while they’re using. It’s so beautiful to be
able to help build up a community of people who
can take care of each other. You break down those walls and
those barriers just enough, and then people make
changes in their lives.
