Diana’s Story: Vent Dependent to Independent

Doctors told me that you need to get the family together you know she’s not gonna make it I said I don’t need to hear that you know give me something give me some other words but I don’t need to hear those words you know I leave it up to God but she’s gonna make it through it was that bad I had a lot of fluid in my lungs and I wasn’t supposed to make it they had to remove one fourth in my right lung and I couldn’t breathe and they had me in a ventilator I wasn’t able to come home I was going to need more help I was still on the ventilator I was on a feeding tube I couldn’t eat I couldn’t drink I couldn’t talk anything and barely even move my body she came to us from a short term facility she was on the vent trached and as a matter of fact she was on the vent for two months and then she came to us for the next level which is the weaning level try to take off the time and it was so hard at first to be without the ventilator to try to breathe on my own it was very hard and then they gave me more hours two hours the next time and more hours and then finally I did it without it within two weeks we were able to wean her off the vent completely and then when they took all of it off I felt free when he took all of the tubes out As the team of respiratory and nursing got her stable and the doctors over saw her care she got better and better and finally as a rehab team of physical, occupational and speech we were able to go in get her stronger get her better they were taking me to the gym every morning and I got on the thing where they were teaching me how to walk and I was able to stand for the first time and when I was they all clapped with me they were so happy because I was able to stand when you see that you have encouragement and the support telling you you can make it and you will make it you don’t want to give up and you won’t give up so with time we were able to get her to be able to walk again to get up on her own she was able to dress herself with less assistant as well as to speak and talk and beginning the swallowing process so she did very well with us very very proud of her We’ve been married almost over 20-some years and well she’s my miracle you know she wasn’t supposed to be here right now but God willing she pulled through everything I want to thank God first for everything he did then I want to thank my husband and my family and my friends for being there with me through the whole time I really appreciate it because that meant a lot and I want to thank the staff members here at Kindred they were there for me and that encouraged me in telling me yes you can do it one of the guys from PT he would tell me he goes you’re going to dance again I know you used to like to dance oh yes I can go dancing now People see me now and it’s like it never even happened they can’t believe it’s like it never even happened
