SAFE COMMUNITIES MADISON – DANE COUNTY – STOPPING THE OVERDOSE EPIDEMIC 11/19/17 A couple of weeks ago I was in Dayton, Ohio for meetings and learned Dayton, or more specifically Montgomery County, is the
“overdose capital of America,” ground zero for America’s opioid crisis. There’s a major civic journalism project underway to mobilize efforts to combat the public health crisis, but it’s a daunting challenge. Just days before the meeting Safe Communities Madison – Dane County held the second Stop The Overdose Epidemic Summit, a follow-up to Summit one five years ago. Safe Communities deserves credit for being at the forefront of this prevention and treatment effort. We’re not Montgomery County, Ohio. More importantly the action plan launched five years ago has resulted in a comprehensive approach involving multiple state and municipal agencies, health care providers, law enforcement, recovery advocates and creation of new resources like the Parent Addiction Network that have been effective agents for harm reduction, treatment and change. There is much, much
more to be done. But Safe Communities is out front and it shows.
