Locus Of Control Addiction Treatment | Treat your Addiction with Locus of Control

Hi my name is Dr. Allison Hopkins and
I’m the clinical director at Channel Islands Rehab in Ventura County,
California. In this episode, I’d like to talk about internal locus control versus
external locus control and how it relates to addiction. Both of these, the
internal and the external locus of control are on a continuum and when one
has internal locus of control they’re more likely to take responsibility for
their actions they tend to be less influenced by others and their opinions,
they tend to work hard to achieve the things they want, they feel confident in
the face of challenges and they tend to be happier and more independent. When one has external locus of control they blame outside forces for their circumstances,
they often credit luck or chance for any success, they don’t believe that they
change their situation through their own efforts, they frequently feel hopeless/
powerless in the face of difficult situations and they are more prone to
experience learned helplessness. Part of an effective addiction treatment program
is learning how to access internal locus of control while recognizing and
overcoming external locus of control to be happier, healthier and more
accountable. As you can see it is important that treatment you receive
needs to be combined with other treatments and methods. No one treatment fits all; a whole client approach. The disease of addiction affects the mind,
body and spirit. Next time we will discuss humanistic therapies and how
lasting recovery is within reach. Thank you for listening.
