I’m Shelby Cullinan with today’s health hews.
“Mad Max” star Tom Hardy hasn’t always walked the straight and narrow, and he recently spoke
candidly about his past struggles with drug addiction. As is often the case for recovering
patients with drug addictions, family has been a key source of stability for Hardy — particularly
wife Charlotte Riley.According to The Daily Mail, the 37-year-old quit drugs in 2003.
He checked into rehab and recommitted himself to his acting career, which has since taken
off. In 2011, Hardy told The Telegraph that his past struggles had actually helped him
as an actor — particularly in preparing for his role in the film “Warrior.” According
to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, illicit drug use costs the United States roughly $193
billion per year in expenses related to crime, health care and lost productivity.
