Qlassics | D-Block & S-te-Fan – Music Made Addict | Episode 01

The sample sounded terrible. So we chopped it up
to the point where we thought… music made the addict in me.
And I thought, that really fits us to a T. First Thrillogy. Where we did our live act
hosted by Charly Lownoise. I remember that some other DJs were
watching and they apped, no, texted… or rang or mailed us
or whatever we used in those days. ‘What was that record?
I want to play it.’ When other DJs say that, you are
pretty sure that you’ve got something. It was released in 2009. I first heard it in 2008. It had that vibe right away,
the vibe of ‘this is it.’ You know? It was rather special. I was sold on it immediately. Sold on it and bought it.
Sold on it… and bought it, yes. They had Keep It Coming, Ride With Uz.
They were monster hits. But Music Made Addict
was their big breakthrough… and that’s when they really took off. It’s not really new or original,
but it had the right mix of sounds… arrangement and samples, of course… that made it what it is now. People have to get used to tracks,
you have to play them a few times… and they start thinking, that’s nice.
But Music Made Addict was an instant hit. The first chords are just free chords
that play the melody… and later we laid that square sound,
that melody track, over it. And that made it fresh.
-At first it was the main melody. Then I told Died, ‘this is cool,
but it needs something to back it up’. Then we added that screechy melody
we made and went looking for vocals. In those days you sampled a lot more,
finding old vocals… and that sample sounded terrible. So we chopped it up
to the point where we thought… music made the addict in me.
And I thought, that really fits us t a T.I keep on searching that feeling for more

-Yes. But the original vocal
was more of a pop song. She would belt out:take me higher.take me highertake me higherWe had no idea who the singer was. We found it on a free sample CD.I keep on searching that feeling for moreI don’t wanna fight this feeling no more
you’ve got to be free freemusic made the addict in meLater we got a message – we get so many
messages and we never respond: saying, ‘you stole my whole song
and things like that’. And we thought, ‘who is this’?
We had no idea. I thought, ‘yeah right.
We get so many messages, just let it go.’ Then an album by that title is released.
No, first a track, then an album… a tour, T-shirts. The lady in question was not amused by
events surrounding the use of her voice. They’re from America and they thought
we were making millions with that music. We made a nice living with that,
but that was about it. So we had to become the mediator… between the artist, D-Block & S-te-Fan,
and the lady in question. And we had to pay them a hefty sum,
which the artists had to pay in the end. Well, we did sample it, so fair enough.I keep on searching that feeling for more

music made the addict in meThe best remix of Music Made Addict? We only had two. One by Headhunterz
& Wildstylez, and one by The Prophet. The one by The Prophet is the most recent
and awesome. If we had to choose, we’d pick
the remix by Headhunterz & Wildstylez… because we’re with Art of Creation,
so we have to say that. The one by The Prophet
stayed closer to the original… which makes it easier for us
to keep playing it today. Because with the state of technology today,
the old song sort of pales. The difference in quality
between then and now is so large… that I felt I had to liven it up. But also to honour it,
so I left the melodies the way they are. It is, in fact, an updated version. It leaves the original pretty much intact,
but gives it a nice tweak. While the Headhunterz & Wildstylez
version is brilliantly original… you were never a fan of the house bit in it. No, it was the time
when Afrojack was getting popular… and I’m not dissing what Afrojack has
achieved, but I was never a fan of… Was unnecessary. Honest answer,
but at that time it was effective… and quite often a producer, I do too,
uses something that you know works. To take something that beautiful…
-We don’t blame Headhunterz… but what Wildstylez did…
-No, you clearly hear it’s Wildstylez. No, I will never forgive him for that. No. Music Made Addict was definitely
one of the major tracks… that gave D-Block & S-te-fan
a formidable hit. Absolutely. When I play the record now,
people still go crazy like they used to. Everybody played it,
which means that it is a hit. Even now when you play it for people
who don’t know it, it just works. It’s because of the energy in the record. This song has that spark that
symbolised ‘what we do is awesome’. To me that is a kind of game changer effect,
which that song definitely had. A few years ago,
going back to 2009 or 2010… right before Facebook hit the scene
and most Dutch people were on Hyves… just like we were,
you could fill in your interests. For instance, ‘I love hardstyle’. Only the interest I had in big letters
at the top was D-Block & S-te-Fan. It was very important to us
and it gave our career a mega, mega boost. There are a number of records that
changed the scene and that is one of them. For the scene it was one of the songs… that took hardstyle to another level. I think the most amazing story is the one
where we were playing in Washington… and someone said: ‘I was so depressed
at that time and didn’t want to go on living. Then I heard that song and thought,
music can be a way out of this. Your song did that for me,
which is why I’m still here.’ When you hear things like that
it’s like, wow. We never dared dream… that one of our songs
could mean that much to someone. The journey they went on
also made them realise that… ‘whoa, hardstyle really is our music
and now we will make a smoking album.’ And they did, because I believe that this is
the best hardstyle album I ever heard. Which album is that?
-Their latest album. Can you tell us what it’s called? I mean it, all the songs on it are hits. So what’s it called?
Right, Antidote. That was also the worst track on it.
