Recognizing Alcohol & Drug Addiction : How to Approach an Addict

Hi, my name is John DePalma from New York
City on behalf of Expert Village I’m here today to help you recognize drug and alcohol
addiction. Let’s talk about how to approach an addict. It’s a very touchy subject you
almost never want to come straight out as we’ve discussed before and accuse them by
asking them are you an addict, are you an alcoholic, usually you want to go the route
of suggestion, the route of example. Showing examples, giving them identification, that’s
usually the easiest way for an alcoholic to want to admit that they need help. Identification
is the way I got cleaned and sober, I met somebody finally who I saw was recovered from
drug and alcohol addiction and I identified with the stories that they told me of their
past. I’ve been where they had been, I’ve done what they had done and I saw this person
leading a happy and healthy life, smiling, laughing, things I didn’t do anymore and that
attracted me. These are the kinds of things that you’d like to try and lead your love
one to, rather than force feed them, something that they’re just not ready to accept this
moment.
