Hi, my name is John DePalma from New York
City on behalf of Expert Village I’m here today to help you recognize drug and alcohol
addiction. Some symptoms of alcohol abuse which often are very easy to tell. It’s very
hard to hide the smell of alcohol, so if you smell alcohol on somebody’s breath, there’s
a good chance they might have a problem with alcohol. Especially when it’s at time when
you wouldn’t expect someone to be drinking early in the morning, while at work, while
doing physical activities. Someone says I have alcohol on my breath, then there’s a
good chance they’re depending on alcohol. Symptoms of alcohol use, I’ll refer to the
manual again are slurred speech which obviously is a good one, in coordination, impairment
inattention or memory. If you’re talking to somebody and they tend to forget what they’re
saying or stop in the middle of the conversation, it’s a very good chance that they’re an alcoholic
or leaning in that direction. Insomnia, nausea or vomiting, hand tremors, anxiety, I mean
these are things that you would only know if you’re in close contact with an alcoholic.
So alcoholism has many faces and if you think you know an alcoholic there are many ways
to try and get their attention which we’ll discuss in a while, but these are some of
the things to watch out for.
