The Answers: Is 12-Step required in addiction treatment?

If you’ve ever looked into residential
rehab programs, you probably know that 12-Step rehabs are the most prevalent —
nearly three out of four treatment facilities. While the 12-Step approach to
recovery has become a classic model for treatment and support groups, 12-Step
programming is not required in order to start your recovery. There are thousands
of non-12-Step rehab programs across the country. Treatment components of non-
12-Step rehab may include: Medically Supervised Detox, Medication-Assisted
Therapy, Dual Diagnosis, Individual Counseling and Family Counseling. While
some people choose to utilize a non- 12-Step rehab program, they may begin the
12-Steps at the end of rehab in order to help maintain their sobriety.
