The Mormon War on Porn | Slutever

is there a part of you that loves the propagation of being a lesbian Mormon pornography for sure like I yes I absolutely love pissing off the church by making Mormon porn like it’s super fun for me if you don’t throw it Mormon you don’t realize that there was like all these sexy things about it but if you go out Mormon like in this kind of repressed sexual environment there’s all sorts of things that are sexy about it but he may not realize like the fact that I’m about to show you the screen thing is like it’s very secret when you get your temple clothes from the temple you don’t show them to anybody least of all non moments you are you are anyone who sees this is going to die and action [Music] [Applause] in 2016 Utah became the first state to officially declare porn a public health crisis taking waves across the world the BBC Time magazine USA Today even The Daily Show all of them talking about a measure to Clarence pornography a public health crisis this anti-pornography resolution claims that porn has a detrimental effect on brain function contributes to emotional and medical illnesses and causes deviant sexual arousal weird porn as always link it to me because that means I’m a psychotic pervert it seemed like there was a lot of holes in this story and I wanted to get to the bottom of all of them so I started at the most logical place a Mormon porn set I’m here at a secret location about to meet Brooke who’s the founder of the porn site Mormon girls calm the pornography itself is actually quite funny and well-made and self-aware and so I’m interested to hear what her take on it is because she grew up in a Mormon community and has since left the church and now of course is in this extremely stigmatized industry Brooke has asked to remain anonymous if she came out as being a pornographer it might really devastate ties with her family in her entire community you grew up in Utah in a very religious family yeah and a big Mormon family so like what that means is I’m especially for someone like me who’s like gay sexual looking at porn masturbating like all of those things were off-limits right I also felt like extra freaky because lesbianism doesn’t actually exist in like the Mormon consciousness we thanks shame because of that or did you somehow have a more liberated attitude yeah I felt a lot of shame I was very secretive about it and porn kind of helped it’ll help me explore my sexuality and I figure out what I am you know right tells you what’s on the menu Anna are a lot of the themes that you explore in your porn based on actual experiences that you had in the Mormon I definitely use my upbringing his inspiration for different like scenes on the site for example with president hopes he promised to honor a little baby he’s like the general stand-in for a Mormon Bishop one of the things he does is he conducts two interviews each year with every member of his congregation and they start young like at 12 years old so like every 12 year old girl is alone in a room with this like older guy and he’s like asking her questions about her sexual behaviors her thoughts her desires have you ever thought about having sex with your brother hell no I’ve heard that President Oaks can be a real pervert and I was nervous about being alone with him I went through those interviews with my bishop that’s definitely inspiration for scenes also I went through the Mormon temple I wore that secret underwear like I went through the rituals where female temple workers like doing rituals on my body where they like slip their hands underneath my clothes and like caress different parts of my body that all works its way into the porn um this is where I keep all the Mormon gear so this is your temple outfit when you come of age you stop wearing normal people underwear and you start wearing this special moment underwear they call them garments you wear them every day socially against your skin for your protection protection against what evil forces in the world so you have your underwear you have your dress and then you’re gonna participate in some Mormon rituals so there’s this which is a fig leaf apron it’s meant to represent the fig leaf that from the Garden of Eden so this is like your modesty the green apron and this robe they’re harder to come by like you can’t get them if you’re not like I talked about that card-carrying Mormon and how do you get them for Poorman various means sometimes our enthusiastic members who like me are no longer affiliated with the church will send us all of their old temple clothes all their old garments naughty super naughty I think I’m warm and underwear black mark yes exactly okay do I put it on [Music] how do you think that the anti-porn resolution is gonna affect people in Utah I don’t know I mean it certainly doesn’t help people feel less shame or on their sexuality right they’re like just continuing down the path of like they’re super anti sex worldview um there is like a like fitting irony I mean Mormons because of polygamy were like are some of the most famous like sexual outlaws in American history we like to give the authentic experience right because for viewers who are Mormon they’re like holy they’re actually doing the whole thing you’re Mormon now that I think I’m a Mormon I’m gonna go interview Betty Davis who’s one of the stars of Mormon girls and also Brooke is gonna direct us in a sort of pseudo porn shoot where she’s gonna walk us through the Mormon rituals and we’re gonna see how it actually goes down at a Mormon girl said what do you think of the costumes because I actually think this bizarrely looks good on me I like it I was never really into this part though I thought that was a little bit weird really without this and without this I might wear this I I think I went to what it’s been the reaction to your work with Mormon girls I mean some people see it as like a negative thing towards their religion I guess but I think that’s what makes it even better because it’s just defying all the rules right and it seems as though religion if anything makes people more I agree it works for me uh-huh me too all right so Carly in this scene you’re gonna be a virginal bride and it’s Betty’s job to inspect you to make sure you’re worthy for your husband yeah yeah so let’s start with you putting your veil back over your face there you go you’re gonna stand there and now Betty’s gonna hold your hands and say to you do you promise to honor and obey me and then you don’t answer and then she’s gonna say to you and say yes do you promise to honor and obey me bow your head and say yes say yes yes all right now before you go any further I mean you’re gonna come up to her very close and say are you a virgin and Carly you’re gonna say yes okay and action are you a virgin yeah are you sure all right cut so what I actually want from you Carly is like a little bit more you’re like yes I am like you know what I mean like you’re not being cool you’re not being coy here you’re like you want her to believe that you didn’t accidentally let your high school boyfriend slip the finger in okay are you a virgin yeah are you sure yeah I’ll be able to tell [Music] yeah I feel I got to watching us he told me it was okay I just left the set of Mormon girls and I learned that definitely a big reason why Brooke makes the porn that she does is a reaction to the repression she felt growing up in the LDS Church so now that I’ve learned the porn version of everything there is to know about the Worman religion I’m excited to get news about this anti porn resolution straight from the source [Music] while it is obviously possible to have a negative relationship to porn the psychiatric community has repeatedly said there’s no evidence that people can actually be addicted to pornography do you think that there should be limitations put on pornography and like who can watch it and where it can be viewed online I think pornography should be outlawed I think that pornography is a cancer to society everyone should stay away from it to keep relationships pure a lot of the like porn stars are sex slaves really a lot of them are refugees and stuff that have been forced into it do you think that pornography is a public health crisis I definitely think that something needs to be done to either stop it or just ban it altogether there is truth that’s established by God and it doesn’t matter what I think and if he says this isn’t appropriate I really don’t think anyone should participate in that do you think that pornography is a public health crisis no most of the people that live around here don’t agree with you true that’s very true I’m here in the state capitol building in Utah about to interview the senator we’re gonna get the rundown on this symbolic ban on pornography he is a lawyer so we know that he’s not anti First Amendment but he does want to implicate restrictions on the ability of people specifically young people to view pornography so yeah is that him no all right that’s just someone in a suit look in Mormon no that isn’t is that him that’s it and he’s not just a senator this anti-porn resolution has turned Wyler into a full-fledged celeb [Music] this is my porn file and what is not there’s no porn in here but it’s all of my articles and when what what I found was when this story went viral was people started sending me stuff like oh you got to read this book you got to read this article and so I just you might be interested in this Time magazine came out with this issue and I’m quoted in this article I don’t show it around a lot because of the the imagery I mean it’s I think it’s obviously sexualized because they’re talking about pornography yes I mean I’m not a prude but it’s not something that I’m gonna run around show you know show kids and stuff I have to admit when I first heard about the resolution my first thought was okay Mormons being prudent pornography and then when I started reading and watching your interviews my mind changed and I thought okay he’s actually coming at this from a really rational well intentioned place would you ever worry that people take it and run with it and people just say porn is bad and then it turns into a way of shaming people for watching pornography well I think at least with people who grow up in Christian homes I think there is a shame element there and I think that those people are much more likely to get addicted to alcohol or drugs as well as pornography because of that shame element so I’m still trying to understand and learn about all these things but clearly we need to talk about self respect self esteem self image and and just respect for people your own body and other people’s bodies so how do you define something as being a public health crisis is it based on anecdotal experiences or you know we’ve declared opioid overdose as a public health crisis we’ve declared a suicide teen suicide as a public health crisis so what I wanted to do is run a resolution and a resolutions not a law we didn’t create a law it’s it’s more of a statement of intent to bring attention to this issue and my objective continues to be to try to protect children from pornography and so I think a lot of kids you know they’ll start looking at pornography out of curiosity city and they have no idea that this could have a hook on them like drugs do with other people or the same people and really kind of undermine their their relationships their marriages sometimes their employment I completely agree with you that we should try and prevent young children from watching pornography yes everything I’m doing is trying to say let these kids grow up and be innocent let them be kids if they want to be if they become adults they want to look at porn all day it’s America they can do whatever they want so I’m not trying to ban it it’s clearly a very loaded subject which is why it’s going so viral yeah yeah oh I got a call from The Daily Show this week they want to you should go on a date oh I’m totally going to LA and I know they’re gonna make fun of me but again I’m not you know I’m not afraid if I can continue to get this message out I’m not afraid of being I mean I’m already the butt of a lot of cooks yeah you’re just trying to start a conversation yeah I’m trying to start a conversation so respect I just finished talking with senator Wyler I actually liked him a lot more than I thought I would he definitely takes a more rational approach to the idea of that monography is bad than a lot of other people in the Mormon community I think that a lot of people and basically the some of the people were going to see tomorrow at the convention are gonna take a less nuanced and more aggressive anti-pornography stance wow this is glamorous [Music] finally we’ve made it to Utah’s coalition against pornography full of roughly 3,000 white people who claim not to masturbate it’s an all-day event ranging from speakers like psychologists who preached that watching porn just once will destroy your life to recovering porn addicts giving confessionals I’m praying that no one’s googled me and we’re gonna talk to people about what they think about this anti porn resolution we’re assuming that they’re psyched about it but let’s see what’s up I’m gonna be arguing a sexual desire is good sex is good and the body is the naked body is good if it were would have degraded what are some reasons people give for thinking that pornography is wrong it alters the way that you see the way you see life the way you see women the way you view sex in general and it just prevents you from seeing things as they really are pornography itself causes you depression shame anxiety dishonesty isolation I mean I could go on forever and it can also because it rewires the reward centers then it leads people to wanting it more and more drugs you can flush out but the memories you can we have a war of an ideology now and that darkness could easily take it take us over just like it could have in World War two like the Nazis and then communism and unborn exactly and then porn well said yeah Nazi communism is important yeah and you know what I’m not willing to stand by and let that happen I want to do my part to make a difference and if you don’t mind me asking what religion do you associate with I’m a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints the Mormon religion I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints we were told like 5 million times that this convention was nondenominational and that it wasn’t a Mormon thing but I mean we barely met any single person that wasn’t LDS Church so it was a Mormon thing first [Music] we’re at the youth panel of people who are covering from porn addiction so we’re gonna try and talk to the guy in the purple he is in his early 20s and he’s a recovering porn addicts this is that baby he’s trying to steal my phone this gives me no bad how do you know if you’re a porn addict like what are the signs you watch it you want to stop you feel like you can’t stop you feel like you’re trying to get help but you feel like you need it and you can’t stop so I’m not talking to the recreational guy who watches porn and whatever a few times a week – watching porn a few times a week is actually fine if it’s not affecting you I wouldn’t say that I would not personally say that my name is Natalie I work with fighting a drug we are a nonprofit organization that educates on the harmful effects of pornography we’re just looking to raise awareness and educate specifically young people [Music] why you so passionate about teaching people about the dangers of pornography did you have a negative experience with porn yourself that’s a great question so personally I never struggled with pornography but as a heterosexual female in my relationships I did date a lot of people who struggled with it and it certainly impacted you know the ways that they thought about me the things that they expected of me because of what they had seen in pornography but it’s definitely something that once you’re stimulated by something there there comes a time when it’s not enough and they’re just going down the rabbit hole to something you know more extreme and in some cases that leads to illegal forms of pornography like child pornography right and then you end up watching like step-mom gangbang porn the last two years those have been like top searched porn types you know which is just something interesting too I read that a lot of family like a family search for situations incest porn essentially yeah so interesting thank you very much yeah when I get too sure give me one okay thank you Laurie can you explain this book that you recently authored yeah well the first book I authored was good pictures bad pictures porn proofing today’s young kids and it’s a read aloud story so it makes it easy for parents to start this conversation with their children when is the best time to start educating children about pornography is it just like immediately after they’re born well I would say when they start having language and when they start having access to the Internet so we say 3:00 because like I said every three-year-old has access to the Internet or access to someone that has access to the Internet which is insane like literally I left my bag over there for five seconds and this little baby came up and grabbed my phone out of my back exactly I was like she’s a porn at exactly are you here today for the anti-pornography convention I didn’t start out that way but after seeing and happening I had to wonder in yeah I myself am a teacher and go to schools on a regular basis all around the state where there is no longer any sexual education taught at those schools and to see the detriment these kids go through and the horrible pain that’s coming from conventions like this is are severely harmful to our population and do you think it’s because this culture of shaming that says porn is bad sex is bad and then people don’t feel comfortable asking the right questions when they want to engage in sexual activity absolutely we have no idea what consent is in general and so no one knows how to talk about it no one knows how to ask about it if we are allowing pornography to be there which it should be allowed because people should be able to do whatever they need to in a safe environment we need to back that with resolutions and funding to promote healthy sex education as someone who considers myself a libertarian sex radical feminist I didn’t think that I was gonna be bonding with the anti-porn Mormons I do agree that we should keep hard for pornography out of the hands of young children however a lot of people went far beyond that though and they sort of took the anti-porn stance to a degree where they just felt like shaming people for the very basic desire of wanting to watch porn and the thing about this this is the right way and this is the only way mentality that religion often puts forward is that it breeds extremes of people leaving those churches in those communities and becoming you know people like me who write slept logs or people like Brooke who makes Mormon pornography and it makes me angry when I see people feeling so much pain that feels ultimately unnecessary based on a belief that doesn’t give human sexuality any room to breathe [Music] you [Music]
