The Ripple Effect – Workman Arts

When someone has had mental health
challenges or addiction challenges, those opportunities haven’t always
been there for you. The Ripple Effect
Workman Arts Workman Arts is an art and mental health organization. We serve artists who identify as having lived experience with mental health or addiction issues. We have 425 member artists. The public presentation side of what we do
is fighting stigma and discrimination. Training programs we offer here
are about helping the artists. A place like Workman Arts,
it becomes a big part of someone’s recovery, and of maintaining their mental health. The Ontario Arts Council (OAC)
has been one of our very best supporters. Without OAC, I don’t know where we would be. At the OAC, it’s one of their priorities now
to look at Deaf and disability arts. Our instructors start off attending classes
and then they start teaching the classes. And then they do become leaders within the community. Maybe at one point they wouldn’t have
thought they would ever teach a class, or wouldn’t really define themselves as professional. But over the years they think,
“Yeah, you know what? I have something to share.” It’s nice when we see that transition happen. Investing in the arts
has a ripple effect Read more about
