Understanding Amino Acid Replacement Therapy and Addiction Recovery

This is Lyle Fried Co-Founder and CEO of
The Shores Treatment and Recovery. I wanted to talk a little bit about amino
acid therapies in the addiction treatment process. Amino acids are the
building blocks that are used for every neurotransmitter in your brain. So you
need the right amino acids going into your body for your brain chemistry to be
properly balanced. That affects all types of mood and thought. And that includes
anxiety, depression, cravings and other factors, general sense of wellness. So
having that right balances is key to avoiding relapse. It’s also key to
avoiding those other issues we talked about. Add into that that dopamine is the
primary neurotransmitter we’re working with. There are others involved including
catecholamines, serotonin, norepinephrine but dopamine is the main factor. So
having that right homeostasis, that balance of dopamine, is crucial. Too much
dopamine can be a bad thing as well, that’s schizophrenia, and other factors
that come into play. But most people with addictions have a deficit of dopamine
from something called the reward deficiency syndrome. By feeding the right
amino acids, for that individual, you can balance that brain chemistry to be
happier, healthier, less ADD, ADHD, less depression, less anxiety but more
importantly for our clientele less likelihood of relapse.
